Summer Leap List

Summer Leap List CoverA good friend told me recently that I wasn’t old enough to have a bucket list. That’s reason enough to keep her on my close friends list forever, isn’t it? But it lead me to sit back and examine  what my goals and aspirations are for the immediate future. And,that prompted me to talk with my T’s about this summer’s leap list. You know, things you want to do before you take your next big leap in life. In our family, it seems we are driven to leap by the seasons so it made sense to look at our goals for the warm, sunny days ahead.

The assignment this morning, after breakfast of course, was to collaborate (a new word for the younger set and being used quite frequently). They were to write down approximately 10 things we would like to accomplish over the next few months. I loved the first question regarding this project. It was “When you say summer, do you mean official summer or just until the weather runs out? You know, Mom, like when the weather starts turning into fall?” I could have ran across the room and scooped that boy up and kissed him right there (if he wasn’t almost 10 and would have been scared to death). Instead, I squeezed him tightly and reminded him not to worry about the time factor but to think about the the things he would really like to do.

It didn’t take long before the list came back. Four sets of big brown eyes were blinking as I read the first three items on the handwritten agenda. New York City. Canada. Utah. As I scanned the rest of it, clearly I was holding a travel itinerary, one that would take about a year to complete, in our style of wandering through America’s backyard. I love it! I love that my kids have broadened their horizons and see the world as the next adventure to seek out. It is confirmation for me that we are on the right path.

Replaced in last year’s list of children’s museum, water park, and apple picking is this year’s cross country grid and the need for a passport to get back into the United States! Even last year’s local Indian’s game request is overshadowed by this year’s motion to see a Reds vs. Padres game at Petco Park. You might think we’ve created monsters. I will agree with you. But, I will have to admit that immediately after looking at the list, I checked the MLB game schedule to find that Cincinnati would be in San Diego the last week of July for a three game series. Whoop! Whoop! It’s a do-able request and I say “Happy Anniversary to Me!”

Please don’t misunderstand my thoughts. I love to mozy around the nooks and crannies of Indiana and enjoy the many things to do here. The point is that I’m thrilled with the way my brood is thinking about the future. There aren’t many limitations or parameters in what they might dream up next. And after all, isn’t that what we all want for our kids? So, here’s to this summer’s leap list. I can’t wait to see where it takes us next!
